TWENTY-TWO

The Correspondence Between Mr Nicholas Raspero

and Lady Isabel Grangeshield

5:10 PM, Sunday 10 July 1544 A.F.

Isabel couldn’t move a muscle for some time after Nicholas had left Grangeshield House. The shock of Mr Nicholas Raspero having learned of what had happened to her was so great that it had eclipsed her fear of Nevsky. Another man knew of what had happened to her. He knew! The simple fact that he knew was unendurable. He knew! Somehow this made everything so much worse that Nevsky’s death was no longer the solution it had been. She knew that Nevsky was now a dead man; Nicholas had been so white-faced with anger that she had known just from the sight of him that Nevsky’s fate was sealed. The one man in New Landern that Nevsky ran from in terror was now after him with a vengeance. Yet, Mr Nicholas Raspero knew what had happened to her. He knew!

She could not bear the thought of ever being in the same room with Nicholas, of ever even seeing him across the park in the distance. He would look at her and he would know what had happened and there was absolutely nothing she could do about it. Everything had become so much worse than before. He would stare! She felt hot and cold with horror whenever she remembered Nicholas saying he had heard exactly what she said.

The rest of that day passed in a blur. She hardly noticed where she was or who she was talking to. She slept badly that night, waking up from nightmares in which Nevsky chased her while Mr Nicholas Raspero watched. The next day she spent as much by herself as possible, avoiding all company; she felt shivery, nauseous; she wanted the world to go away and be somewhere else for a while, but the day after that she began to feel more accustomed to this new state of affairs, as if life had become more difficult than before but she would manage somehow. She resolved to no longer be the victim of her nerves.

10:15 AM, Wednesday 13 July 1544 A.F.

Isabel came down to breakfast determined to try to eat something, having eaten hardly anything for the past couple of days. There was a certain air about Lord and Lady Easton as they looked over at her. They were both hunched over that day’s issue of the New Landern Recorder.

‘Interesting news, Isabel,’ Lord Easton told her. ‘Very interesting news.’

‘And what is that?’

‘Captain Nevsky has been killed in a duel.’

Isabel froze. ‘Who killed him?’

‘That’s just it,’ Lady Easton exclaimed. ‘No-one knows. It was a Lord from the North but no-one knows who he is. He came in a carriage from the north with his servant, fought Nevsky in a duel and killed him, and now he’s gone back to the north. It is all a great mystery.’

‘Clearly a man like Nevsky must have made many enemies,’ Lord Easton commented, not looking at Isabel as he poured himself another cup of coffee. ‘We should not be too surprised that he should have been killed by one of these many enemies.
